Crossing a coastal bar increases risk.

Crossing a coastal bar in choppy conditions

Choppy coastal bars are difficult to navigate and can cuase your boat to capsize!

Maritime Safety Queensland would like to remind waterways users of the importance in understanding the increased risk of capsizing when crossing a designated coastal bar in choppy conditions.

It is also a good opportunity to remind users that wearing a lifejacket is compulsory when crossing a coastal bar in a vessel that is less than 4.8m in length. This rule applies to all children up to 12 years of age at all times in a vessel that is less than 4.8m in length and underway

MSQ advises that you talk to your local VMR before heading out and seek advice regarding navigating the bar that you are intending on crossing.

Please ensure that your members, family and friends are aware and informed of this important message and that they take the time to view the checklist for crossing coastal bars on the MSQ Website.
