80 years since the sinking of Centaur

Centaur

14th of May 1943, 332 people were onboard the Hospital Ship, Centaur when she was struck by a Japanese torpedo.  Just 64 survived.

It was on this day 80 years ago that the Centaur was cruising off the coast of Queensland, east of Moreton Island, when she came under attack from a Japanese submarine.  The Centaur sank quickly, taking all but 64 of her passengers with her to a watery grave.   Public outrage ensued as attacking a hospital ship is considered a war crime.

The wreck of the Centaur was not discovered until 2009, 2059 meters below the surface.
